Boorowa
Boorowa
The Irish heart of the Hilltops, rich in heritage and wool.
With wide open landscapes along the Boorowa River, rich pastoral traditions and a proud Irish heritage, Boorowa is pure country charm just 70 minutes from Canberra.
Irish cousins Roger Corcoran and Ned Ryan were among the first Europeans to settle here after receiving their ticket-of-leave in 1821. Their families laid the foundations of Boorowa and the town’s Irish roots continue to shine, especially during the famous Boorowa Irish Woolfest. Celebrating fine Merino wool and Irish spirit every October long weekend, the festival features the beloved Running of the Sheep, Irish music and dancing, a Growers’ Market and the moving Blessing of the Fleece. It’s a true highlight of the Hilltops calendar.
Historic Finds and Country Delights
Beyond the festival, Boorowa is also a haven for nature lovers. Wander along the peaceful riverbank walking tracks and you might be lucky enough to spot the elusive platypus gliding through the Boorowa River, or catch a flash of green and gold as the vibrant Superb Parrot, an endangered local resident, flies from tree to tree. From rare wildlife to rural wonders, Boorowa is full of surprises, both feathered and furry.
Boorowa’s heritage streetscape is a pleasure to explore. Step inside the classical Boorowa Courthouse, now home to a café and the local information centre. Discover rare railway history at the heritage-listed Boorowa Underbridge, admire the last pisé (rammed earth) building at the Boorowa Museum or browse the Glenara Gallery set inside a grand Early Victorian home.
The town’s unique octagonal War Memorial, inspired by English Georgian design, stands proudly near the Boorowa River bridge, creating a striking view down the main street.
Antique stores, character-filled pubs and cafés serving Devonshire teas with homemade scones and jam, invite you to linger a little longer. You’ll also find boutique gift shops, country bakeries and a scenic riverside walking track that links the main street to the Showground, perfect for stretching the legs and soaking in the rural charm.
Boorowa is also home to colourful public artworks, including murals and mosaic installations that celebrate the town’s Indigenous and European heritage. Just off the Lachlan Valley Way, Boorowa is a true country treasure waiting to be discovered.
